Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharynx that one simply calls the throat. The pharynx is the common upper gastrointestinal system and respiratory system. The passage begins at the back of the nose, extends to the rear of the mouth, through the larynx and to the entrance of the esophagus (tube which descends into the stomach).
It is more common that a virus is the cause of the sore throat but it is still possible that a bacterium is the origin of the signs and symptoms.
Signs and common symptoms of pharyngitis:
- Sensitivity of the throat;
- Significantly increased pain on swallowing;
- Sensation of swallowing needles or crushed glass.
